WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Obama nominated Senator John Kerry for Secretary of State:

“John Kerry has served his country throughout his life, from Vietnam to the United States Senate, and now as our next Secretary of State.  He will bring his experience and knowledge from his time as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to his new role, and I look forward to his swift confirmation.

“I want to thank Secretary Clinton for her service as Secretary of State these past four years. She has earned the gratitude of the entire nation for her tireless work.  She brought energy and skill to the State Department that has led to stronger ties with our allies, has done much to restore our reputation around the world, and has furthered the cause of equality and justice for girls and women abroad. It has been an honor working with her, and I wish her all the best.”
