WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Obama's speech at Knox College in Illinois:

“Today’s remarks by the President underscore both the enormous progress we have made over the past four years toward economic recovery as well as how much more work remains in order to restore economic security for the middle class and those striving to reach the middle class.  While our markets are doing well, jobs are being created each month, and the housing market is in recovery, too many Americans remain out of work, and many middle-class families are still struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living.

“I agree with President Obama that the best economy is one built on the strength of a growing and secure middle class, and House Democrats’ Make It In America plan for jobs and competitiveness is premised on growing and strengthening the middle class by helping the private sector create jobs that pay well and lead to opportunities.  Every American deserves an equal shot at the American Dream, and this means a good job, affordable health care, access to quality education, a chance at homeownership, and retirement with peace of mind.  I look forward to hearing the President’s proposals over the next several weeks to help strengthen our economy and make the middle class more secure, and I hope House Republicans can set aside the partisanship that has led to gridlock in Congress and instead partner with Democrats to create jobs and make our economy more competitive.
