WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Obama's announcement of a new $1 billion National Community Deployment Challenge as part of Democrats' all-of-the-above energy strategy:

“Today the President announced measures to help businesses and consumers upgrade to advanced vehicles, moving us closer to energy independence and economic security. This initiative is one step our nation can take to maintain our edge in innovation, which is a key part of House Democrats’ Make It In America plan to create jobs and strengthen American manufacturing. Innovation, especially in clean energy technologies, will help fuel our long-term economic competitiveness and add jobs in new and expanding sectors.   It is an essential component of the all-of-the-above energy strategy being pursued by the President and Democrats in Congress to ensure that this nation has sufficient energy available to meet its needs today and for many years to come.

“The challenge issued by the President to deploy more electric and advanced vehicles within the next ten years that will be as convenient and affordable as those powered by gasoline is an example of bold leadership that will help create jobs and ease fuel costs.  I hope Republicans will work with Democrats to build on this announcement by passing Make It In America legislation that invests in getting more advanced vehicles on the road and in cutting-edge vehicles research so that we can create jobs and stay the world’s top innovator.”
