WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the passing of former Speaker of the House Tom Foley:

“I was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the passing of my friend,  former Speaker Tom Foley, and my thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Heather, and their extended family.  I had the great privilege of serving alongside him in the House for thirteen years.  From his roots as a Spokane prosecutor, Speaker Foley made it his mission to fight for justice and stand up for those without a voice.  His tenure in Congress – and, indeed, his years as Speaker – were characterized by the pursuit of bipartisan cooperation in order to achieve real results for the people of Washington’s Fifth District and for all Americans.  Testament to his love of country, even after leaving Congress Speaker Foley continued to serve the American people with distinction as our Ambassador to Japan.  Our nation and the Congress are stronger today because of his service.”
