Washington - House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer released the following statment today praising the life and public service of long-time House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery who died earlier today:

"I would like to add my voice to the chorus that is rising across the country today in honor of Congressman Sonny Montgomery.

"Congressman Montgomery served his nation honorably from the battlefields of Europe and Korea to the halls of the US Capitol.  He remembered where he came from, working tirelessly on behalf of his district in Mississippi and America's veterans.  The 1984 overhaul of the landmark GI Bill, a law which bears his name, is a fitting legacy for a man who devoted his life to protecting and honoring the men and women who served our nation.

"I extend my condolences to Sonny's family and friends on this sad day."
