WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the House passed the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 tonight:

"Today, the People’s House passed legislation, with broad bipartisan support, that will help millions of Americans live healthier and more fulfilling lives.

"The Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 seeks to tackle some of the most substantial issues facing the prescription drug industry today.

"First, this legislation will significantly decrease the time it takes to provide FDA approval of medications that save lives, prevent disease and manage symptoms.

"Second, this legislation – for the first time ever – provides the FDA with adequate resources needed to protect the public from adverse drug and device products that have already reached the marketplace; enhancing safety by ensuring that potentially dangerous medications come off the shelves as quickly as possible.

"And third, this legislation encourages pharmaceutical companies to perform pediatric safety reviews of their medications, a measure that will protect our children in cases where what is right for adults may not be right for young people.

"The American public deserves to know that the medications they put in their bodies are safe – and they also deserve quick access when a potentially life-saving or disease-preventing medication is developed.

"This legislation is one of the most sweeping overhauls of prescription drug law in recent memory – and I am proud to be a Member of a Congress that views the health and vitality of those we serve as a top priority."
