WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement regarding legislation to extend the Iraqi Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program, which provides visas to translators who served alongside U.S. troops:

“I was pleased to assist with the final passage of a temporary extension of the Iraqi Special Immigrant Visa program, and I want to thank Rep. Blumenauer for his hard work on this issue.  With House action last night and Senate passage today, I hope the President will quickly sign this important bill into law.”

“The Iraqi Special Immigrant Visa program extends a helping hand to Iraqi allies who put their lives on the line to assist our troops at a time when it was extremely dangerous to do so.  Many of them continue to fear for their lives as a result of their service to our men and women in uniform.  Not only does the extension of this program reaffirm our commitment to those who took great risk in Iraq to help us – it also signals to our local allies in Afghanistan and other countries that the United States will stand by those who do the same today and in the future.  I join in thanking these men and women for their assistance and in reassuring them that we will not forget their courage and sacrifices.”
