WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in recognition of today as National Manufacturing Day:

“I join in marking Manufacturing Day, an opportunity for America’s manufacturing businesses to highlight the products they make, their talented workforce, and their role in growing our economy and creating jobs.  Our manufacturing sector continues to demonstrate strong gains, as we saw earlier this week in the monthly report from the Institute for Supply Management, and Congress ought to do everything within its power to capitalize on them.  Unfortunately, due to the ongoing Republican shutdown, the Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report for September was not released today, but it remains clear that we are not doing enough to help our manufacturing sector create jobs to the fullest extent – good jobs that pay well and provide real opportunities for workers and their families to pursue the American Dream.

“Congress has a responsibility to work in a bipartisan way to help create manufacturing jobs that will help our economy compete and grow.   That starts by ending the federal government shutdown and working to take up and pass Make It In America bills, many of which already have support from both sides of the aisle and represent a consensus view of what steps will be the most effective at helping spur private sector job growth.  I hope that the House leadership will allow Make It In America bills to come to the Floor soon so that Democrats and Republicans can work together to support the expansion of a strong manufacturing sector for America.”
