WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the deaths of Americans Ezra Schwartz and Anita Datar, who were killed by terrorists last week:

“Today I join in offering comfort and condolences to the family of Ezra Schwartz, an eighteen year-old American student murdered in Israel by terrorists on Thursday, as they lay him to rest today.  Ezra was much-loved and touched so many lives in Boston, Israel, and everywhere he went.  His murder, like that of an American development worker, Anita Datar, in Mali on Friday, leaves us all deeply saddened and searching for answers.

“Ezra and Anita were among our very best citizens - idealistic, kind-hearted, and representative of what makes America great.  Their murders at the hands of barbaric terrorists underscores the fight we continue to face and the importance of standing up to violent, twisted ideologies that fear the freedom and democracy we espouse.

“I extend my condolences to the Schwartz family, including Ezra's parents, Ari and Ruth, and to his siblings Mollie, Hillel, Elon, and Avi, as well as to the Datar family, including Anita's young son, Rohan.  May we all be inspired by their example to open our hearts to others and strive to repair the world around us.”
