Hoyer Statement on "Mission Accomplished" Anniversary

WASHINGTON - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the fourth anniversary of President Bush's speech on the USS Abraham Lincoln:

"Four years ago today, President Bush stood in front of a banner that proclaimed Mission Accomplished.

"This photo-op has become a potent symbol of the Bush Administration's rhetoric on the war that is consistently focused on swaying poll numbers and scoring political points rather than conveying reality on the ground to the American people. Furthermore, today is a potent reminder that, while our troops have performed brilliantly, the Administration's implementation and execution of its Iraq policy can only be characterized as incompetent and unsuccessful.

"This pattern continues today as the White House pledges to stay-the-course despite the failure to make progress in Iraq.

"I hope the significance of this anniversary will help convince the President that he should heed the will of the American people and sign the bill that Democrats will send him today, thereby starting our nation on a new direction in Iraq."
