WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for May:

“It is clear from this morning’s employment report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that Congress must act to end the uncertainty caused by a lack of a clear direction in fiscal policy and made worse by sequestration.  With 178,000 private sector jobs created in May, our economy continues to grow at a steady pace; however, it is not enough to create the jobs we need to provide opportunities and security for our middle-class.

“The best remedy Congress can provide for our economy is a big and balanced solution to deficits that replaces the irrational Republican policy of sequester.  Unfortunately, Republicans have continued to refuse to compromise and have yet to appoint conferees to negotiate with the Senate over a budget.  This ought to be the first step toward addressing our fiscal and jobs challenges, and over the summer months Congress has an opportunity to consider Make It In America legislation to invest in a stronger manufacturing base and help our businesses compete.   Republicans and Democrats must work together to achieve these goals and restore certainty to our economy.  There is no time to waste.”
