WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released their jobs report for May:

“Today we received news that our economy added 54,000 jobs last month. It is disappointing that fewer jobs were created than in recent months, but it is an important sign of progress that private-sector employment has grown for 15 straight months under President Obama. With the unemployment rate increasing to 9.1% it is clear that too many Americans are still struggling to find work, and they deserve Washington’s attention and help.

“Unfortunately, job creation has simply not been a priority for Republicans. After five months in the House majority, they have failed to bring a single job-creating bill to the floor. In fact, they have focused far more effort on dismantling the programs that provide Americans with a measure of economic security, including Medicare. Democrats’ priorities stand in high contrast: we have put forward the Make It In America agenda to create manufacturing jobs, spark American innovation and competitiveness, and rebuild America’s tradition as a country that makes things. If Republicans want to show that they’re serious about the struggles of unemployed Americans, they will join us in supporting this agenda.”
