Hoyer Statement on March Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for March:

“Today’s monthly jobs report confirms that our economy is recovering and that job opportunities are returning.  In March our unemployment rate dropped again and is now at 8.2% after the addition of 121,000 private sector jobs - the twenty-fifth straight month of private sector job growth. This is a further sign that the policies implemented over the past three years by President Obama and Congressional Democrats are working.  However, as long as millions of Americans are still looking for jobs, we will not stop in our push for Congress to pass further job-creating measures.

“House Democrats’ Make It In America plan for helping private sector businesses expand is the best way to start creating middle-class jobs now and to lay the foundation for a competitive, growing economy for years to come.   It invests in an educated workforce to attract businesses, in the innovation that drives entrepreneurship, and in rebuilding our infrastructure to help move our manufactured goods to markets at home and abroad. Republicans have wasted fifteen months without addressing the need for job creation in a serious and comprehensive way and not providing the certainty businesses need to thrive. Instead the GOP has focused on a budget that ends the Medicare guarantee while protecting tax cuts for the wealthy.  I hope their response to March’s encouraging jobs report will be a willingness to come together and work with Democrats to pass comprehensive jobs legislation, like Make It In America, that will carry our recovery forward and invest in future middle-class growth.”
