WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released their jobs report for March:

“Today’s employment numbers are encouraging news for Americans. Our economy added 216,000 jobs in March, and our private sector grew for the 15th straight month. The unemployment rate dropped to 8.8%, its lowest level in two years. Nevertheless, that unemployment rate represents millions of Americans still feeling the effects of the worst economic crisis of our lifetimes. Americans need to be confident that their government is building on our economic recovery, not undermining it.

“Unfortunately, through 13 weeks in the House majority, Republicans have yet to even consider a single job-creating bill. It’s even more worrisome that Republicans passed a spending bill has the wrong priorities and would cost hundreds of thousands of jobs, according to a wide range of non-partisan observers. Americans want a government that puts a priority on reducing the deficit—but that also puts a priority on job-creating investments that are essential to out-educating, out-innovating, and out-building our competitors."
