WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released their jobs report for June:
“Today’s release of employment numbers from June brings mixed news. On one hand, it’s encouraging that the private sector, whose job creation is essential to our recovery, added 83,000 jobs last month. And the unemployment rate, while still far too high, dropped and is at its lowest level in nearly a year. On the other hand, the net loss of 125,000 jobs shows that Americans are still struggling and that much of the work on job creation remains.
“In light of today’s news, Republicans’ continued blocking of job creation measures looks especially irresponsible. From the job-creating Recovery Act, to tax credits for small businesses, to the extension of unemployment insurance for more than 1 million Americans, Republicans have consistently stood against the middle class and economic recovery – betting that if progress failed, they would win. Last night, the House passed legislation to save jobs, including preventing the layoffs of 140,000 teachers who are critical to our children’s education; I hope that Republicans will finally consider the interests of their middle-class constituents more important than their political ambitions and support enactment of those measures.”
