WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month, which is observed throughout the month of May:

“I join in celebrating the start of Jewish American Heritage Month, which is observed throughout May.  Since the founding of our republic, Jewish Americans have helped build the strong, free, and democratic nation we live in today.  Millions of Jewish Americans have served – and continue to serve – in our Armed Forces, placing their lives on the line to protect the nation that opened its arms as a refuge to those seeking a better life and the freedom to practice their traditions freely.

“The important role of the Jewish community in our country is reflected in the close bond between the United States and the State of Israel – a relationship rooted in shared values and commitment to justice and human rights.  I am proud to stand strongly with Israel in Congress and to have been on the front lines of the effort to free Soviet Jews during the Cold War.  The United States must continue to remain engaged as Israel’s partner as it seeks a secure peace and an equal place among the family of nations.  I join in thanking Jewish Americans for all they have done – and continue to do – to enhance our country and make it a better place for all Americans.”
