WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released their jobs report for January:

“Today’s employment report for January shows that America’s private sector grew for the 13th month in a row. For the second straight month, our unemployment rate dropped by .4%, to 9.0%, matching the sharpest one-month decline since 1998. But more needs to be done for the millions of Americans who are still out of work.

“Job creation must remain Congress’s top priority. We must continue to advance the Make It In America agenda, a plan to rebuild our manufacturing sector and create an environment that encourages manufacturers to keep and create good jobs in the U.S. Manufacturing, in fact, continues to be a leader of our recovery: the manufacturing sector grew by 49,000 jobs last month, and I hope that both parties will work to pass Make It In America bills to build on that success. I also hope that as Congress works to restore fiscal responsibility and reduce the deficit, we recognize the importance of the investments in innovation, education, and infrastructure that are the foundation of economic growth and new jobs.”
