Hoyer Statement on Israel's Independence Day

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel's Independence Day:

“Today, on the sixty-fifth anniversary of the modern State of Israel’s founding, I join in celebrating the achievements of an extraordinary people who daily prove to the world the power of freedom and democracy to triumph in the face of great adversity.  Since its independence, Israel has become a beacon of progress and liberty in a region that continues to struggle with enmity, extremism, and anti-Semitism.

“In my many visits to Israel over the years, I have witnessed profound changes as the country and its people made the desert bloom, developed a leading high-tech economy, absorbed freedom-seeking immigrants from the former Soviet Union and around the world, and took risks for the sake of building a lasting peace.  As Israel’s quest for peace continues, it has no stronger ally than the United States.  Our relationship is built not only on shared strategic interests but on a common adherence to the values of democracy, human dignity, and free markets.  I have been proud to help forge ever-closer ties between our countries throughout my service in Congress.

“As Israelis and Jews throughout the world mark this joyous anniversary, there must never be any doubt in the minds of those who would question Israel’s existence or its right to an equal place among sovereign nations: the Jewish State is here to stay and will never stand alone.”
