WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the 66th anniversary of Israel's Independence Day, which begins at sundown this evening:

“As Israelis mark sixty-six years of independence, I join in celebrating with them and with the millions of Jews around the world who look to the modern State of Israel as the fulfillment of a 2,000 year-old dream.  I have had the opportunity to visit Israel thirteen times as a Member of Congress, and each visit has shown me the resilience of the Israeli people.  I am proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel as Congress works to strengthen and deepen the close U.S.-Israel relationship through enhanced security cooperation and expanded trade.

“The bond between our countries is built on the common foundation of a free economy, democratic traditions, and strong cultural ties.  At the same time, we possess common interests that range from humanitarian missions around the world to efforts to prevent the dangerous rise of a nuclear-armed Iran to advancing the cause of a secure peace between Israel and its neighbors.  Throughout my tenure in Congress, I have been proud to work across the aisle to bring Israel and the United States even closer together, and I look forward to celebrating Israel’s Independence Day and the achievements of an extraordinary people for many more years to come.”
