WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement tonight after the President’s remarks on Iraq:

“Tonight, President Obama authorized necessary action to protect American personnel and assist Iraqi civilians fleeing the brutal forces of the ISIL terror group. The airstrikes that were authorized and the humanitarian airdrop that took place are part of an effort to protect Americans and respond to the request of our Iraqi allies for help in fighting back against a group responsible for the killing of many innocent Iraqis and other human rights violations. I support this mission to act swiftly and decisively to disrupt ISIL’s efforts to continue its advance against our Kurdish partners.

“As President Obama made clear this evening, the ultimate resolution to this conflict will come not from United States military action but from Iraqi leaders setting aside their differences and uniting behind a new Prime Minister and an inclusive government. I will continue to monitor this situation closely, and I commend the dedicated service of our Armed Service personnel who will carry out the operations announced by the President this evening."
