WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the House passed bipartisan legislation to end the government shutdown, ensure America can pay its bills, and begin a budget conference:

“After sixteen days of a government shutdown and weeks of uncertainty as to whether our nation would be able to pay its bills on time, the House has now passed a bill to reopen the government and prevent a catastrophic default.  Once again, we saw a manufactured crisis resulting from reckless partisanship that could only be solved in a bipartisan manner.  Over the past two weeks, the irresponsible few who held America’s economy hostage ought to have learned that doing so is not an effective tool for forcing a partisan agenda through Congress.  House Democrats will continue to stand united to protect the well being of our nation and its people.

“I hope that Democrats and Republicans can now move forward in a spirit of compromise to reach a long-term budget agreement that will set us back on a sound fiscal path.  We now have appointed conferees on the budget, giving Congress an opportunity – and a serious responsibility – to craft an agreement that will replace the irrational sequester and pursue a balanced approach to reducing the deficit.”
