WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the introduction of House Democrats' comprehensive immigration reform bill, H.R. 15, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, of which he is a cosponsor:

“I was proud to join House Democrats today in introducing a comprehensive immigration reform bill aimed at fixing our nation’s broken immigration system.  Our nation has always been a haven for those seeking a better life and a chance to participate in growing our economy and adding new voices to our democracy.  This bill includes a pathway to citizenship for the millions who have already been living in our communities and contributing to our economy, it helps ensure that the young people who come from overseas to study and train in our schools can remain here and use their talents to make our country stronger, and it fixes many of the problems that have plagued our visa application system in recent years.

“When the Senate passed a bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform bill in June, it was a historic moment for our country.  Today, Democrats are making it clear that we are committed to a bipartisan approach and will continue to push for the House to take up comprehensive immigration reform legislation this year.  I hope House Republicans will work with us and do what is both morally right and economically smart for our country.  In addition to calling on him once more to allow a vote to re-open our government, I urge Speaker Boehner to bring this bill to the Floor in a timely fashion so the full House can vote on how best to ensure that our nation remains a beacon of liberty and opportunity for all.”
