WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in recognition of Congressman John Dingell, Jr., who today became the longest serving Member of Congress:
“For 57 years, John Dingell has been as much an institution in the House of Representatives as the bells that ring votes or the mace that stands majestically beside the Speaker’s chair. His longevity in the People’s House has been the result of an unfaltering connection with the people he represents. These have not only been the families of southeast Michigan but all Americans who seek equal justice, access to opportunities, and responsible government. For many years, John has been a dear friend, and his guidance and institutional knowledge enriches the work of all who serve with him.
“As John reaches this extraordinary milestone, becoming the longest-serving Member of Congress in our nation’s history, I join in celebrating the important role he has played throughout his tenure in securing opportunities for Americans that grow and sustain a strong middle class. From presiding over the passage of Medicare to his work on the passage of the Affordable Care Act, from his support for civil rights to his advocacy for clean air and water, John Dingell’s 57 years in Congress have been years of service to Country, commitment to principle, love of the House, and extraordinary legislative accomplishments.
“I am honored to be his colleague and blessed to be his friend.”
