WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah:

“I join in observing Yom HaShoah today, a day of remembrance and reflection on the evils of genocide.  As we recall the tragic nature of the Nazis’ brutal mechanization of discrimination, violence, and murder, we also celebrate the courage and heroism of the many who resisted by providing sanctuary to their neighbors, risking their lives to rescue strangers, and bearing witness to the twentieth century’s most heinous crime so that it would never be forgotten.  In Israel, the United States, and around the world, memorial candles will be lit, the stories of survivors will be recounted, and the names of victims will be read aloud to keep their memories alive.

“In marking this solemn occasion, let us not only remember the 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and the 5 million others who perished – including Roma, LGBT individuals, political prisoners, and others – but reaffirm the unshakable American support for the State of Israel as it continues its historic mission to protect Jews’ right to exist safely in their ancient homeland and in communities throughout the world.”
