WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in recognition of Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah, which begins at sundown:

"Yom HaShoah, the day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust, compels us to consider not only the nature of evil but the determination of people everywhere to triumph over it.  Today, in Israel, America, and throughout the world, Jewish communities recall both the unbelievable tragedy of genocide but also the courageous efforts of ordinary people - Jews and their neighbors - to resist, to rescue, and to record the truth so that the world will never forget.

"I join today in remembering the 6 million Jews and 5 million other victims of the Holocaust - and in reaffirming America's unwavering determination to prevent such a tragedy from ever taking place again. We stand side by side with the State of Israel in protection of its unassailable right to exist and the safety and security of the Jewish people in their homeland and around the world."
