WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins today, September 15, and runs through October 15:

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for us to reflect on the history of Latinos in this country, which dates back to the founding of our nation’s oldest settlements. They have enriched our nation with their contributions to science, medicine, education, and the arts, as well as their distinguished military and public service, including service in both chambers of Congress.

“As our nation’s fastest growing community, the challenges facing Latinos are also a matter of special urgency. As we recover from a deep economic recession, we know that many are struggling to send their children to college, have access to quality health care, and find good-paying jobs. Democrats have fought to ensure passage of legislation that addresses these issues, and we remain committed to pursuing policies that bring economic security and the opportunity for a better life to Latinos and all Americans.

“Throughout this month, I hope that Americans will join me in celebrating Latinos’ important contributions to America’s history and rich heritage.”
