WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on funding for full-service community schools in the Consolidated Appropriations Act:

“I am pleased that as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, the House approved investing $10 million in the Full-Service Community Schools program.  This investment will support 10 community school projects currently receiving funding, and will allow us to expand support to 10 additional projects.

“We’ve seen from schools already part of the program that the full-service community school model works.  Children can be more successful in the classroom when services that address non-academic factors like physical and mental health, financial problems, housing and other issues are made available to families.  By coordinating academic and non-academic services such as health care, career counseling for parents, nutrition, and early childhood education, we make sure that children can come to school every day ready to learn and succeed.

“This year, I introduced legislation with Senator Ben Nelson that would expand support for these types of schools across the country.  I will work with Secretary Arne Duncan next year to include this legislation in our reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.”
