WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in recognition of Sunday as the fourth anniversary of the Affordable Care Act being signed into law on March 23rd:

“Sunday marks four years since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, which is already helping millions of Americans gain access to quality, affordable health care. Over 5 million Americans have now enrolled in private plans through the federal and state health insurance marketplaces, including more than a million young people between the ages of 18-34.  Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, up to 129 million Americans with pre-existing conditions can no longer be subject to discrimination by insurance companies; individuals and families no longer have to worry about lifetime or annual limits; and over 3 million Americans under the age twenty-six have gained coverage under their parents’ plans.  It is also slowing the growth of health care costs and contributing to deficit reduction that sets our country back on a path toward fiscal sustainability.

“I was proud to work toward its passage in the House and to defend it from fifty-one attempts by Republicans to repeal or undermine the law.  Democrats will not stand idly by as House Republicans remain focused on turning the clock back on important reforms and patient protections. I hope that Republicans will drop their obsession with repealing or undermining the Affordable Care Act and instead work with House Democrats to strengthen this law so millions more can benefit from it.”
