WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the last combat brigade exited Iraq:

“More than seven years after the beginning of the war in Iraq, the last American combat brigade heads home today. I join all Americans in thanking our brave men and women in uniform for the courage and the sacrifice they have shown, year after year. Together we also mourn the loss of all those who lost their lives in the service of their country.

“Even as the combat mission in Iraq ends, there remain troops on the ground who are working to train and support Iraqi forces in their work to ensure stability and security for all the people of Iraq.  Democrats have consistently supported our troops in harm’s way, and we will continue to focus on our nation’s most important national security priorities, including protecting Americans from terrorism and ensuring that our troops still in Iraq, and around the world, have the resources they need to stay safe and do their job.”
