WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the appointment of Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), Congressman Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Congressman Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.), Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-Calif.), and Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) to the Select Committee on Benghazi:

“While we opposed the establishment of a Select Committee in the first place, I support Leader Pelosi’s decision to appoint these five Democratic Members to participate on the panel.  This tragedy has already been thoroughly investigated in both the House and Senate and by the State Department, and no wrong-doing was found. We ought to be focused on implementing the recommendations of those investigations in order to prevent future tragedies, but because Republicans continue to demand further inquiry, the Leader has selected individuals who will work to separate fact from fiction.

“Though Democrats will be sitting on this Committee, unfortunately there is a great deal of uncertainty as to whether the Republicans who created it will allow its work to be fair and nonpartisan.  Congress should not politicize a national tragedy, and I hope the Republicans controlling the Committee will ensure that it operates transparently and permit its Democratic Members to participate equally.”
