WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the announcement that the District of Columbia’s Frederick Douglass statue will be unveiled at a ceremony on Wednesday, June 19th in the United States Capitol Visitor Center:

“I welcome the announcement that the District of Columbia’s statue of Frederick Douglass will be unveiled in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center next month. This statue, which will be the third statue or bust of an African American on display in the U.S. Capitol, will represent more than 600,000 District of Columbia residents and serve as tribute to a great Marylander and civil rights leader.

“As a Marylander and advocate for the District of Columbia, I’m proud that District residents, who have made outstanding contributions to our nation, will finally receive the recognition they deserve in the U.S. Capitol, and I want to thank Congresswoman Norton for her continued leadership that made this possible.”
