“Today’s employment report had some encouraging news for our economic recovery. Our economy added 103,000 jobs, and America’s private-sector, which added 113,000 jobs, grew for the 12th straight month by 113,000. Also encouraging was a sharp drop in the unemployment rate—the largest single-month decline since 1998.
“While our unemployment rate is at an almost two-year low, it is still far too high, and it represents millions of Americans who remain out of work. Now that a new Republican House majority has been sworn in, the two parties share responsibility for creating jobs for those millions of Americans. It is crucial that our Republican colleagues not jeopardize our economic recovery, whether by recklessly cutting back investments in scientific research and education that create long-term economic growth and good jobs, or by playing political games that threaten a devastating default on our nation’s debt. I hope that the two parties can, instead, work together to continue policies that create jobs and strengthen our middle class, including the Make It In America agenda to strengthen American manufacturing.”
