WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement today on the death of Michael Brown and the protests in Ferguson, Missouri:

“The death of Michael Brown is a terrible tragedy, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and his community.  It ought to concern all who believe that justice must always be blind and that no unarmed teenager – no matter his race, religion, or national origin –  should ever have to fear for his safety because he is walking down the street.

“As President Obama made clear earlier today, there is no excuse for anyone in a position of authority to disregard the constitutional rights of those peacefully protesting or exercising the right to a free press.  There are many questions that remain unanswered, and a thorough investigation must proceed with due haste and due process.

“In times like these, we ought to join together as one nation to honor this young man’s memory and ensure that justice prevails, and I will continue to stay in close contact with Rep. Lacy Clay, with leaders from the Congressional Black Caucus, and with state and federal officials as the investigation moves forward.”
