WASHINGTON, DC – Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the formal nomination of Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher as Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security.

“I offer my congratulations to Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher on her nomination as Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security. While it is difficult to see such a talented Member of the House - and a dear personal friend - depart our ranks, I believe her new position offers an opportunity to use her expertise and skills where they are needed most.

“Congresswoman Tauscher’s contributions to the House over the years are many. As a high-ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, she has been at the forefront on defense and security matters of the most critical importance, and is one of Congress’ leading experts on efforts to cease the spread of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.

“She has also been a model of leadership in her role as the Chair of the House New Democrat Coalition. Under her direction, New Democrats have continued to make important contributions to the House’s efforts on U.S. competitiveness, global leadership, national security, and other policies. I have admired her blend of pragmatism and passion, insight and expertise, which has earned her great respect among our colleagues on both sides of the aisle.

“President Obama and Secretary Clinton are extremely fortunate to have Congresswoman Tauscher join the Administration in this new capacity.  Their gain is the nation’s gain, but she will truly be missed in the House. I am honored to have worked by her side, and I wish her the very best.”
