WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the Senate confirmed Tom Perez as the next Secretary of Labor:

“I am pleased that the Senate took the important step today of confirming Tom Perez as our country’s next Secretary of Labor.  As our economic recovery continues, America’s workers will benefit from a Labor Department with the dynamic leadership I know Secretary Perez will bring.  As Secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation, he oversaw the implementation of our state’s living wage law, took steps to crack down on workplace fraud, and helped Marylanders avoid foreclosure.  During his four years as Assistant U.S. Attorney General for Civil Rights, Secretary Perez focused his efforts on fighting discrimination against Americans with disabilities, implementing training in the enforcement of laws against hate crimes, and working to defend voting rights against discriminatory state laws and unlawful voter suppression.

“I am confident that Secretary Perez will continue the outstanding work performed by former Secretary Hilda Solis, and I join in thanking Acting Secretary Seth Harris for his leadership during this time of transition.  I look forward to working with Secretary Perez to defend the rights of working men and women as well as to advance policies consistent with House Democrats’ Make It In America plan for jobs and economic competitiveness.”
