WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Senate confirmed Gina McCarthy as the next Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency:

“I am pleased that the Senate has confirmed Gina McCarthy as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency with a bipartisan vote of 59-40.  In her more than twenty-five years of service to the people of this country, Ms. McCarthy has worked at both the state and federal levels developing and implementing policies aimed at protecting the environment while encouraging economic growth and greater energy efficiency.  She has been a champion in the fight against climate change and its effects, and I know she will work hard to implement the President’s vision for reducing carbon pollution in a way that promotes the development of clean manufacturing and job growth in the advanced energy sector.  In her role as Administrator, Americans will look to her to ensure that our air quality continues to improve, our nation’s waters are clean and safe to drink, and that we reduce and manage waste properly.

“I look forward to working with Ms. McCarthy to achieve these goals, especially with regard to the health and water quality of the Chesapeake Bay, and I congratulate her on her confirmation.  I also join in thanking Acting Administrator Bob Perciasepe for his steady leadership at the agency during this interim period.”
