WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the attack on Muslim worshippers in London:

“The people of London experienced another terror attack, this time targeting innocent Muslim worshippers as they left Ramadan prayers.  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said that ‘Hate begets hate; violence begets violence.… We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love.’  Whether it is in London or here in our country – as in Portland, Oregon, recently – we must combat hatred with tolerance, respect, and openness to understanding one another.

“Islamophobia and racism have no place in democratic societies, and here in America we must unite against them as one nation, indivisible.  In this country, in the United Kingdom, and across the world, those who stand for freedom and democracy have a responsibility to make it clear that no terrorism, regardless of its motivation or aim, will ever be tolerated in our midst.”
