WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for April:
“The jobs numbers released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that, while our recovery continues, Congress still must do more to address job creation. I am encouraged that our private sector created 176,000 jobs in April, dropping the unemployment rate to 7.5%. However, businesses continue to face uncertainty as a result of partisan dysfunction in Congress and the ongoing sequester. Now more than ever, Speaker Boehner has a responsibility to appoint budget conferees so that Democrats and Republicans can work together toward a big, balanced agreement on deficits that can replace the sequester. Congress must also take action on comprehensive jobs legislation, like House Democrats’ Make It In America plan.
“Because revitalizing our manufacturing sector will have a strong multiplier effect on job creation throughout our economy, House Democrats have continued to focus on our Make It In America plan. Last month, we announced four key priorities for the 113th Congress which have the greatest chance of helping our manufacturing sector expand as well as drawing the broad, bipartisan support needed to be enacted into law. These four priorities are: adopting a national manufacturing strategy, promoting the export of U.S. goods, encouraging businesses to bring jobs and innovation back to our shores, and training and securing a twenty-first century workforce. To date, the Republican Majority in the House has failed to address job creation in a meaningful, comprehensive way – but this can easily be changed. I hope Democrats and Republicans can come together to pass Make It In America bills into law and to make progress toward the kind of big and balanced agreement necessary to restore fiscal discipline and end the uncertainty caused by the sequester.”
