WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding the announcement of the Democratic Immigration Principles at a news conference today:

“The Democratic Immigration Principles announced today meet the expectations of immigrant families and communities across the nation, reflect the needs of U.S. employers and acknowledge our national security concerns.

“Our principles, unlike the proposal presented by President Bush a few days ago, are an honest, progressive and balanced approach that reflects the complexities of our immigration system and they should serve to assess legislative proposals as they move through Congress."

"I hope that any serious legislative effort considered by Congress fully recognizes the importance of family reunification, civil liberties, and national security concerns and offers true relief to long-time immigrants as outlined by the principles Democrats present today.

“To the immigrants in our communities our message is clear and straightforward: Your sweat, your toil, and your tenacious spirit contribute to the strength of America’s economy and in recognition we would like to offer you the opportunity to become permanent members of our society.

“We hope President Bush and Republicans in Congress will work with us to pass a legislative proposal that will produce the results our nation expects and needs.  It is the right thing to do for the hard-working immigrants of this nation and it is the right thing for America.”
