WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the tragic shooting at the Washington Navy Yard this morning:

“My thoughts are with the victims and the families who lost loved-ones in today’s tragic shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.  Many of those who serve there in military and civilian roles live in my district, and while we do not yet know all the details about who carried out this terrible shooting, there is no doubt that it has shaken the Navy, the greater Washington D.C. community, and our nation as a whole.

“The courageous first responders who arrived on the scene quickly and are working diligently to secure the area, prevent further tragedy, and launch an investigation to uncover the answers we all seek deserve our gratitude and our support.  Both these law enforcement personnel and the men and women who are posted at the Navy Yard work day-in and day-out to keep Americans safe, and we are grateful to all of them for their unwavering service even in the face of great danger.  I will continue to monitor this situation very closely, and I hope our nation will come together over the coming hours and days in offering prayers and comfort for those who have suffered through this terrible ordeal.”
