WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the 75th anniversary of Social Security, which is tomorrow, August 14:

“For 75 years, Social Security has stood as an unbroken promise to America’s seniors: that after a lifetime of hard work, they have the assurance that they can retire with real security.  Where many seniors were once faced with a life of poverty, for the last 75 years they have instead been able to lead a life of dignity.

“From the beginning, however, Republicans opposed the creation of Social Security, and today they are once again working to undermine this program that so many seniors rely on.  Republicans want to privatize Social Security and leave it to the whims of Wall Street, which goes against the core principle of security for seniors.

“Democrats are fighting against Republican plans to turn Social Security over to fluctuating markets.  Just as Democrats fought to create Social Security 75 years ago, Democrats are again fighting to keep it strong for America’s seniors for generations to come.”
