WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after President Obama announced that 4 million Americans have enrolled in private health plans through the health insurance marketplaces created through the Affordable Care Act:

“With 4 million Americans now enrolled in private health plans through the federal and state health insurance marketplaces, our country continues to make progress toward the goal of ensuring that affordable, quality health care is accessible to everyone.  In addition to millions of Americans enrolling in private plans, health care reform has resulted in real benefits for millions more, including the patient protections that prevent tens of millions from having their coverage dropped when they become sick and facing discrimination based on their gender or on a pre-existing condition.  House Democrats are ready to work with Republicans to strengthen the Affordable Care Act, but we will not allow them to turn the clock back with partisan efforts to undermine or repeal these important reforms.”
