WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today as the number of Americans who have lost access to emergency unemployment insurance this week reached 2 million:

“Republicans in the House and Senate ought to weigh carefully their position of continuing to block an important lifeline for Americans who continue to seek jobs.  This week, the number of Americans who have seen their emergency unemployment insurance suddenly disappear has surpassed 2 million. Congress must take action immediately to restore this assistance before another 72,000 Americans, on average, lose it each week.  I urge Republicans to consider the impact any further delay will have on our economy as well as these 2 million Americans and their families.  We must restore this emergency assistance without delay.”
