WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today as the 110th Congress convened its Second Session:

“Democrats will continue our fight to move America in a new direction in 2008.  We are focused on addressing the economic insecurity that is felt by so many Americans; on strengthening our national security and refocusing on the fight against terrorism; and taking action on global warming.

“I hope that in the spirit of new beginnings that accompany a new year, Republicans and Democrats will work together to make real progress for the American people.  The American people do not want ideological gridlock; they want progress and change.  Working together on an economic stimulus package that is timely, temporary and targeted is a very important place to start.

“Last year, Congress demonstrated that it is listening to the American people and responding to their needs.  We enacted major energy legislation that will lower costs for consumers and reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil; reduced college costs for millions of families; and implemented an ‘Innovation Agenda’ that will keep American workers competitive in a global economy.

“Unfortunately, Republicans blocked needed progress in other areas.  On issue after issue, the Bush Administration and Congressional Republican Leaders ignored the views of a majority of Americans.

“With new beginnings come new possibilities.  In the second session of the 110th Congress, I am hopeful that we will address the American people’s priorities in a bipartisan way.”
