WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after Senate Republicans, for the third time, blocked legislation extending tax cuts to small businesses and unemployment insurance benefits to millions of Americans:
“More than a million Americans have lost their unemployment insurance because a minority of obstructionist Republicans has, for the third time, blocked the Senate from extending this vital protection for the middle class. Those Americans—contrary to some of the outrageous statements we’ve heard from Republicans in recent weeks—are not lazy; they are not undeserving; they do not enjoy being unemployed. They are hardworking men and women who lost their jobs in an economic crisis created by Wall Street recklessness that occurred under Republicans’ watch. By blocking this jobs package, Republicans also blocked vital tax provisions to help small businesses innovate, grow, and create jobs; along with measures to help prevent companies from sending jobs overseas. And by standing in the way of providing our seniors and military families with greater health care security last week, they left the House with no other recourse than to move forward today with a shorter-term solution to ensure that millions of Americans keep their access to their doctors. Republicans should be ashamed for standing in the way of job creation and health care at a time when millions are still out of work.
“It’s also worth noting that many of the same Republicans who blocked unemployment insurance and tax relief for small businesses and families out of concerns over the deficit are personally responsible for wiping out the largest surplus in our history. If Republicans applied the same scrutiny to massive tax cuts for the privileged and debt-financed war as they do to assistance for struggling middle-class families, our nation's fiscal future would be far healthier.”
