WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this afternoon:

“The Republican Party does not have a record to run on, so it can only attempt to distract, distort and deceive.  The American people are not going to fall for those tactics.

“The increasingly desperate rhetoric being used by President Bush and Congressional Republicans just one week before next Tuesday’s mid-term election cannot obscure the fact that their Party’s record is one of incompetence, ineffectiveness and failure.

“Our brave servicemen and women in Iraq and Afghanistan continue to inspire us with their professionalism and valor.  In stark contrast, our civilian leaders – due to gross miscalculations and incompetence – have failed to execute a plan for success in those countries that does justice to our military’s proud service and sacrifice.

“Meanwhile, the Rubber-Stamp Republican Congress has refused to ask the hard questions that could lead to a correction of repeated policy failures by the Administration, and it has abdicated its constitutional role of oversight.

“Democrats are committed to taking our nation in a new direction."
