WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) spoke at a press conference this morning on the harmful impacts of the extreme Republican budget on small businesses.  Below is a transcript of his remarks:

“I want to first congratulate Nydia Velazquez of New York on the extraordinary leadership she has shown on behalf of entrepreneurs and small businesses and medium-sized businesses and yes, even large businesses in our country.

“We need to grow jobs. What we are doing is pointing out another instance where the overall policy of the Ryan budget is to disinvest in America, disinvest in our growth, disinvest in our education, disinvest in our infrastructure, disinvest in innovation and, yes, disinvest in helping the entrepreneurs of America create jobs, expand opportunities for our people.

“I want to congratulate the Chairwoman and I want to congratulate Chris Van Hollen, who is the ranking Democrat on the Budget Committee in making it very clear to the American people what the Ryan budget does to America, not for America. What the Ryan budget does in terms of families, of children, of students, of colleges and universities around this country, of people who need nutritional assistance in this country, who need housing assistance in this country.

“Chris Van Hollen has been making the case that we ought not to disinvest. This is a specific example where disinvestment hurts America and hurts American entrepreneurs, which is the basis of growing our economy.

“I want to also congratulate and thank Congresswoman [Janice] Hahn for the leadership that she has shown making sure that entrepreneurs and small businesses have the opportunity to grow and expand in our country.”
