WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) delivered the following remarks today at a press conference with House Democrats and NDD United calling on House Republicans to raise the spending caps for Fiscal Year 2018:

“The Trump-Mulvaney budget is not real. It is a pretense, and it does not come to grips with the challenges confronting America. It is an ideological document, not a document that will ever be utilized. Hal Rogers, former Chairman of the Appropriations Committee and Republican Congressman from Kentucky, says this, he called the Trump budget ‘draconian, careless, and unproductive.’

“That is the lack of leadership we are seeing from the White House and from the Office of Management and Budget.  It is the kind of leadership that voted to shut down the government of the United States of America [in 2013]. And the kind of leadership in OMB that voted not to open up the government of the United States of America to protect the American people.

“If we are going to act responsibly on behalf of the national security of this country and on security in the global community, we will adopt a budget that does in fact lift the caps… as a responsible, reasonable, not careless, not unproductive as [Representative] Rogers points out, budget for the United States of America.

“I want to congratulate John Yarmuth for his leadership on the Budget Committee to get us to a budget that does exactly that.

“Let us all remember [Speaker] Ryan headed the Budget Committee, Mr. Price headed up the Budget Committee, and now we have a new budget director. None of their budgets were ever implemented. Ever. And, in fact, they were so unreasonable, most of the appropriations bills were not even reported to the Floor to implement those budgets.

“We need to get real. We need to get responsible. We need to get it right for the American people. Thank you.”
