WASHINGTON - House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the outlines of the House Republican’s Fiscal Year 2004 Budget:

“The Republican budget is astonishing in its reckless disregard for the real needs of the American people.

“This budget tells America ‘We should slash the health care benefits of the veteran who fought in World War II to pay for an irresponsible tax cut for the wealthiest among us.’

“It tells America ‘We should cut funding for education and leave children behind so that we can pay for a tax cut that largely benefits those making over $150,000 a year.’

“It tells America ‘We should put the brakes on making the roads and bridges you drive on safer and better.’

“And it tells America ‘We want to make unacceptable cuts in the Medicaid benefits that keep our grandparents healthy.’

“The budget should be a blueprint of our nation’s priorities but the Republican plan is a political document solely designed to accommodate an irresponsible tax cut at a time of record deficits.  This budget does not lay out a realistic course of action for the American people on how Congress plans to confront skyrocketing deficits while making the needed investments in our country.

“Next week, the American people will see that it is the Democratic Party that can present an honest, fiscally responsible budget that invests in our nation’s priorities and gets the economy back on the right track.”
