WASHINGTON – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer released the following statement today regarding testimony by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke before Congress and a bicameral, bipartisan Congressional Leadership conference call with the President regarding a possible economic stimulus package:

“I was encouraged by the conversation with President Bush today that there is broad agreement to act quickly and in a bipartisan manner on an economic stimulus package.

“I am hopeful that we will work together to produce a bipartisan proposal that will get the economy moving again.

“Chairman Bernanke’s testimony today underscored the importance that any package be timely, targeted and temporary, and should not exacerbate our long-term fiscal position.  Quickly enacting a simple and focused stimulus that puts money in the hands of low and middle-income Americans will be the most effective shot in the arm to the nation’s economy.”
